Tuesday, 8 January 2013
Exhibit Hall 3 (Austin Convention Center)
John C. Schaake, Consultant, Annapolis, MD; and R. Hartman

Diagnostic tools are needed help forecasters produce reliable ensemble hydrologic forecasts. Tools are needed to: (i) identify problems in ensemble forecast procedure calibrations; (ii) make better choices when making operational forecasts; and (iii) manage expectations for the forecast system. Experimental diagnostic graphical displays based on existing available output files generated by components of the Hydrological Ensemble Forecast System (HEFS) being implemented nationwide by the National Weather Service will be presented. These include displays designed to clearly show the utility and reliability of alternative input precipitation forecasts (e.g. RFC HAS QPF, GFS and CFS) at all available lead times through the year.
