Colleges and universities nearly universally assist their students with career planning and post-graduate life through major and job fairs, academic advising, and career centers. At a liberal arts university, the choices at job fairs for meteorology majors are not always pertinent. Furthermore resumé designs from career centers do not always reflect a scientific leaning.
In response to requests to review student resumés, answer career questions, and an overall desire to prepare our students for post-graduate life, Valparaiso University Meteorology has offered a Professional Perspectives Seminar for over ten years. Topics include career choices, resumés, cover letters, handshakes, dining etiquette, and living alone in a new city.
The overall design of the course will be outlined. Evolution of key elements will be described, i.e., we now include how to address a physical envelope. Unique aspects of the course will be reviewed. Student responses to the course outcomes will be shared.
