2.2 Bias Correction of Station Parameters Worldwide from Unified Model Forecasts

Monday, 11 January 2016: 1:45 PM
Room 226/227 ( New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
David L. Keller, 557th Weather Wing , Offutt AFB, NE

Station parameters forecast by a United States Air Force implementation of the United Kingdom Met Office Unified Model are bias corrected in near-real time simulated operations at the 557th Weather Wing. Standard station parameters are corrected for over 10,000 stations worldwide. It is seen that corrections are due to station elevation mismatches, boundary layer bias, and "land use" mismatches including stations near bodies of water. Tables and maps are presented with both the amount of bias of surface parameters, as well as the correctness of the bias corrected forecasts.
