GOES-R will be operational next year. In preparing its use in real time severe weather applications, we study the proxy data of GOES sounder layered precipitable water (LPW) data products in efficient variational data assimilation. The data impact study helps us anticipating future GOES-R ABI data impact with much higher spatial and temporal resolution. The GOES sounder LPW data is assimilated into a 3DVAR analysis. The analysis is used to initialize a WRF-ARW model forecast. Comparing the forecasts with and without GOES LPW data against observations, such as in-situ and radar data, numerical results will be discussed and evaluated.
