Abstract: This paper systematically introduces the research on the Mesoscale Heavy Rainfall Observing System (MHROS), mechanisms of meso-scale heavy rainfall formation, meso-scale numerical weather prediction model and hydrometeorology, conducted by the Institute of Heavy Rain (IHR), China Meteorological Administration, as well as the configuration of the operational system that is widely used in China’s meteorological stations.

Facing the technology development and increasing public need in our country, IHR is seeking domestic and global opportunities in cooperation and communication. To take on the responsibilities as national center for heavy rainfall monitoring and forecasting, our future research will focus on the nephanalysis of rainstorm system and microphysics of cloud, the trigger mechanism of convection, the organizational structure, the water structure of convective clouds and the microphysical process of convective clouds in the warm-sector rainstorm, the development of data assimilation and short-range forecasting system for hazardous weather and the physical parameterization scheme for regional numerical model, as well as the monitoring of flood and waterlogging.
