As many industries (e.g., Agriculture, Energy, Retail, Advertising, etc.) become more mature in their use of “big data” to attempt to better understand their operations, productivity and performance, the use of data external to their routine operations is becoming more standard. Companies in these industries are becoming more aware of the need to use third party data to create models to predict future performance. Weather information is one of those external datasets that companies are beginning to seek out more frequently. Data scientists are seeking historical and real-time weather information to build their predictive models and to implement product offerings for the industries served.
Much of the archived weather data is in weather industry specific formats, a wide variety of geographical projections and a wide variety of resolutions. This presentation will discuss the processes and challenges to create easily accessible global historical and real-time datasets through Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs) and Software Development Kits (SDKs) for developers in a variety of industries.
