While launched at the start of the mobile app revolution in 2008, RadarScope’s history reaches back to the early 90s when PCs and networks first acquired the capabilities needed to process and display radar data in near real time. Over the past eight years, RadarScope has evolved to keep up with advances in mobile hardware and operating systems as well as rapidly improving radar capabilities and products. It has expanded its reach from a focus on smartphones to a full spectrum of form factors ranging from wearable devices to TVs. Looking forward, we envision RadarScope as a central component in a suite of professional-grade tools and services to improve access to more and better meteorological information that will aid in studying, understanding, and responding to the weather. We look briefly at the past 20 years of visualizing meteorological data on mass-market platforms and ahead to what the next few years will bring.
