Tropical cyclogenesis remains one of the great enigmas of the tropical atmosphere. David Raymond’s longstanding interest in the problem has led him to participate in several field experiments, including the Tropical Experiment in Mexico (TEXMEX) which he and I organized in 1992. I will talk about what we learned from that experiment and David’s role in subsequent research on the problem and will summarize where the field is now and where it might be headed, emphasizing key concepts that David developed or contributed to.
