The tangent linear and adjoint atmospheric and oceanic components have been linked inside of COAMPS (Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System) utilizing the Earth System Modeling Framework. The coupled adjoint (tangent linear) model allows gradient (perturbation) information to pass across the ocean-atmosphere interface. Adjoint sensitivity analysis indicates that the upper layers of the ocean are sensitive to levels above the atmospheric boundary layer.
