The National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) and the Federal Aviation Administration have collaborated to develop a dual polarization S-band phased array radar. The paper will describe the development objectives and the progress to date of the Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD). The ATD be used to demonstrate calibration processes and polarimetric performance on phased array radar technology. The initial capability of the ATD will allow for the demonstration of coincident surveillance of airplane targets and weather. The ATD is scheduled for installation beginning in late 2017 at the National Weather Radar Testbed (NWRT) facility in Norman, OK.
