The Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS) has been owned and operated by the National Weather Service’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Central Operations (NCO) as part of the NWS’ Office of Dissemination’s Integrated Dissemination Program (IDP) since January 21, 2015. MADIS was jointly developed by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Atmospheric Research (OAR) and the National Weather Service (NWS). It was designed to extend NOAA’s observational assets by leveraging partnerships with non-NOAA entities such as international agencies; federal, state, and local agencies (e.g. state Departments of Transportation); universities; volunteer networks; and the private sector (e.g. airlines, railroads). MADIS integrates observations from these non-NOAA stations with those of NOAA to provide a finer density, higher frequency observational database for use by the greater meteorological community. MADIS adds value to all data it collects by applying QC techniques to the observations to assess data validity and by simplifying access to the data. Access is simplified by providing easy to use interfaces to MADIS distribution services and applying standards to the underlying data sets that comprise MADIS. MADIS can also restrict access to data, based on provider needs, which allows NOAA to use the data for research and operations without impacting the provider’s business model. MADIS has been collecting and saving all data that it receives since it started collecting data in 2001.

NCO is responsible for MADIS operations, all MADIS data are archived at the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), and OAR’s Global Systems Division is responsible for tier three support and MADIS improvements. This poster presentation will provide information on current MADIS functionality and scheduled improvements to operational MADIS for FY2018 and beyond.
