The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) currently uses Real Time traffic cameras to capture and streams images from all five boroughs through their website. These images provide DOT personnel and citizens with real-time traffic conditions to plan routes and maintenance services. However, even with the new technologies and services, the DOT falls short of using those data on the same scale as satellite imagery. This research project used Image Segmentation and Edge Detection to analyze the image density of pedestrian through a crosswalk. This image analysis can provide researchers and planners the key information they need to plan and direct immediate services based on image analysis as a remote sensing tool while effectively using the hardware and technology already in place.
