NCAR operated a range of profiling instruments in the southern Salt Lake Valley to study the nocturnal boundary layer for the VMTX project. Instruments included a backscatter lidar, sodar, wind profiler, tethersonde, soundings, and surface stations. This report discusses some performance issues of profiling the nighttime stable boundary layer, and reports on some of the observations made including efforts to quantify characteristics of backscatter lidar image data.
