The National Weather Service’s Integrated Decision Support Services (IDSS) connects weather information and warning products to its core partners. By working within a socioeconomic framework, IDSS incorporates users’ needs, including trust, information clarity, and information that is tailored to partners’ needs to deliver key weather information. The immediate goal of IDSS is to focus on the impacts of weather events to save lives and property, and in the long run, effective IDSS can facilitate behavioral changes that produce long-term societal benefits. We can evaluate the IDSS societal benefits by completing a value chain analysis for understanding how decisions are made, how information changes outcomes and how this information ultimately delivers value to society.
