There were 33 significant tropical cyclones that developed in the Western North Pacific basin in 2001. This study examines statistics of the differences between the Navy's Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS^TM) and best track estimates published by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). Of particular interest are the effects of removing the "best and worst" storms from the annual sample. COAMPS^TM performance relative to other global and mesoscale models will also be presented.
