Numerical prediction of atmospheric icing

Haraldur Ólafsson, University of Iceland, IS 150 Reykjavík, Iceland; and C. Ubelmann and G. Hafsteinsson

Icing is an important risk for aircrafts and reliable prediction of areas of local risk of severe icing is of high value. A case where severe icing was observed is simulated with the numerical model MM5. The event is a result of interaction of frontal flow with orography, leading to rapid ascent of moist air. The simulation is very succesful in reproducing high concentration of supercooled liquid water in the area and at the levels where the icing was observed. The results are encouraging for the new operatonal system of high-reslution simulations for weather forecasting (HRAS) in Iceland.
