Submonthly (6-20-day) wave patterns and tropical cyclones (TCs) in the East Asian monsoon region under different ISO propagation routes were detected and analyzed. In the ISO westerly phase, the northward propagating ISO appeared to influence the correspending submonthly wave patterns and TCs, and made them more energetic and lasted longer. However, in the ISO westward mode, the ISO provided a background condition which was detached from the submonthly perturbations. Thus, the submonthly wave pattern and high-intensity TCs obtained less energy from the background flow than in the ISO northward mode. Therefore, it is suggested that the results of the present study can be useful in improving the medium-range forecasting in the East Asian summer monsoon region.
