Size Spectra and Controls on Mesoscale Convective Systems: Evidence from East Atlantic NASA CPEX-CV Program

In September 2022, during NASA's Convective Processes Experiment - Cabo Verde (CPEX-CV), the NASA DC-8 investigated convective regions in or near the intertropical convergence zone and African Easterly Waves, obtaining detailed remote sensing and in situ data, including dropsondes. Using NASA's satellite-based IMERG data to compare the size and lifetime of convective systems, despite frequent African Easterly waves, we find that the mesoscale convective systems in the East Tropical Atlantic were This talk shows initial data from the 2022 CPEX-CV field campaign to explore potential explanations for the differences.
