The teaching of Atmospheric Sciences at Barry University

The experience of teaching Oceanographic Sciences at Barry University was presented at the Sixth Symposium on Education. One of the main conclusions of that paper was to recognize the need to integrate the teaching of some aspects of atmospheric sciences to the curriculum offered to the students at the School of Adult and Continuing Education.

The first course offered was Weather and Climate of Florida, which provides the students an analysis of Florida’s weather and climate, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes; in an attempt to expand the student’s understanding of the dynamic nature of the atmosphere, and the concern to protect what is considered Florida’s most valuable physical resource.

The next step, was the introduction of a course that combine two of the most interesting and current topics in modern science: Global Warming/El Niño, that will provide the students the necessary elements to understand the opposing viewpoints related to Global Warming; and, at the same time, what is El Niño, and how it affects the weather globally.
