Microburst Recognition for Meteorologists and Aviators

Mary M. Snow, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL

The deadliest weather phenomenon for pilots is the windshear associated with microbursts. Whether in a small, single-engine plane or a wide-body jet, escape from a microburst requires enormous skill. The best choice for an aviator is avoidance. Microbursts can best be avoided if they are recognized by meteorologists who can better warn pilots, or by the pilots themselves. Visual clues for recognition are provided within the atmosphere as well as on the landscape.
