Florida Leadership Institute in Environmental Science (FLIES): Implementing GLOBE across Florida

Paul H. Ruscher, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL; and W. R. Lusher

Through the newly created Florida Leadership Institute in Environmental Sciences, Florida State University is providing comprehensive environmental science training for K-12 teachers, using protocols established in the GLOBE program. Atmospheric measurements are supplemented by those relating to hydrology, land cover/biology, and soils. In addition there are applications of global positioning satellites (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS) using LANDSAT imagery. In addition to GLOBE protocols, we are developing phosphate protocols for monitoring phosphate levels in water bodies throughout the state.

Atmospheric measurements include precipitation, maximum, minimum, and current temperature, cloud cover and type, relative humidity, pH of precipitation, aerosol, ozone, and barometric pressure. All measurements are made daily at K-12 schools worldwide, using a local solar noon observation time. Data (including protocols newly established in 2000 by FSU scientists) will be illustrated as well as our training plan. More information on GLOBE may be found at http://www.globe.gov/.
