What About Water? The Maury Project and WES: Teacher Enhancement Programs for the K-12 Classroom

Debra S. Brice, San Marcos Unified School District, San Marcos, CA

Through The American Meteorological Society's Maury Project and WES ( Water in the Earth System), teachers are bringing ocean science into the classroom in ways that were unimagined just a few years ago. Students in the K-12 classroom are using data from the TOPEX/Poseidon Satellite and seeing sea level changes caused by El Nino. They are super-cooling water and finiding out what effects it has on the Ocean-Atmosphere interface. Through WES, an online learning program, teachers are learning to use real-time data about the oceans and weather to help their students learn about the global water cycle and the Hydrosphere. I will be sharing some of the activities teachers have developed and are using in the San Diego Area using both of these innovative programs.
