ArcView applications in USDA crop weather analysis
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), World Agricultural Outlook Board (WAOB) provides official government forecasts of agricultural commodities. These estimates are dependent upon variables such as temperature and precipitation that influence crop progress and condition during the growing season. Recently, WAOB meteorologists implemented operationally a geographical information system (GIS) to monitor temporal changes in the weather relative to major crop producing regions worldwide. Several ArcView applications were developed to automate data processing and display, improving meteorologist capabilities to identify and delineate crop areas of concern. Examples of these applications in USDA crop weather analysis are presented, including a description of system architecture and development.
