Integrating GIS and Applied Meteorology

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an innovative technology suitable for disciplines requiring real-time decision-making support. Long the domain of geography departments, meteorology programs are developing courses that survey GIS theory and introduce students to the structure, design, and application of database management systems capable of accepting and manipulating large volumes of spatial data. To be successful, institutions must secure trained instructors, well-equipped labs, current software, access to data, and adequate funding. This paper examines the integration of GIS at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and offers insight into the process that is applicable to other institutions seeking to enhance their programs by implementing GIS.
