Recent advances in Internet technology have enabled both humans and data processing systems to interoperate in a distributed manner using standard World Wide Web protocols. This allows for the development of a distributed global processing system which is neutral with respect to operating systems and programming languages, and which is compatible with emerging enterprise security models. The US Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center has taken a leadership role in developing an architecture for meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) applications which builds upon these principles and implements the "Web Enabled Navy" objectives for METOC data products. We present this architecture and case studies of successful development of Web enabled applications and services.
