Observational plan for typhoon over West North Pacific using Aerosonde (Typhoon Hunter 2000, 2001)

We are planning a new observational experiment for typhoon over the Northwest Pacific near Japan next 2 years. Corporation for Advanced Transport & Technology (CATT) in Japan funds the experiment. We will use Aerosonde for typhoon observation, which is an unmanned meteorological aircraft to observe for long time under the severe condition. Additionally, observations by research vessels, GPS sondes and Doppler radar are also planned.

This experiment aims for examining the impact of adaptive observational data from Aerosonde, which are assimilated with other in-situ and satellite observational data to improve numerical prediction for typhoon. The second purpose is to study the effect of shallow convection in the atmospheric boundary layer of typhoon using Aerosonde data and TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite) PR (Precipitation Radar) data. In addition, we will establish an observational technology of Aerosonde for typhoon observation in Japan.
