The evolution of a hurricane-trough interaction from a satellite perspective

A case study is presented describing the interaction of Hurricane Bertha (1996) with an upper-tropospheric trough shortly before landfall in North Carolina. The purpose of this case study is to illustrate the evolution of the interaction as seen in water vapor imagery. The similarity of the features in the satellite images to gridded analyses of potential vorticity suggests that some types of trough interactions may be identifiable from satellite imagery and may aid in the forecasting of resulting intensity changes.
