Latent Heating Structures of Hurricanes from TRMM Measurements
Surface precipitation retrieved from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite-based passive and active microwave measurements are already proven to be very accurate. The vertical distributions of latent heating from the passive microwave satellite measurements are reasonable. However, detailed studies on hurricane heating structures have not been conducted yet. With improvements of TRMM TMI and TMI/PR rain profiling algorithms, vertical structures of hurricanes at their different stages appear to be more realistic. Thus, new latent heating datasets from TRMM are analyzed to reveal vertical heating structures of hurricanes in detail. Heating structures from mesoscale model simulations will also be compared to the TRMM results for same hurricanes in order to solidify the retrieved vertical structures of latent heating. Detailed results will be presented at the conference.
