The analysis of finite time instability is a valuable tool for diagnosis and prediction of midlatitude weather patterns (e.g., Molteni and Palmer 1993). In this poster, we present such an analysis applied to vortex-centered hurricane maps of surface winds. The analysis identifies optimal structures preceding the rapid intensification of hurricane strength as well as estimates of intensity amplification.
