45 HIWRAP Analysis of Tropical Cyclones during GRIP

Tuesday, 1 April 2014
Golden Ballroom (Town and Country Resort )
Stephen Guimond, NASA / GSFC, Greenbelt, MD; and G. M. Heymsfield and M. McLinden

Analysis of the rapid intensification of Hurricane Karl and development of Tropical Storm Matthew during the NASA GRIP field experiment conducted in 2010 will be shown. The focus will be on a new airborne radar called HIWRAP and the wind retrieval algorithms described by Guimond et al. (2014). Additional data sets will be used to comprehensively describe the storm dynamics and understand the value of the HIWRAP radar flying aboard the Global Hawk unmanned aircraft.
