Intended to inform the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the NOAA Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP) and NOAA Storm Surge efforts to effectively convey tropical cyclone risk and uncertainty; the HFIP Socio-Economic Working Group was created to help identify need(s) and provide guidance towards making tangible socio-economic changes to information NHC generates to effectively communicate risk and uncertainty.

NOAA funded research is underway to assess hurricane information needs and integrate social science methodologies into tropical and extra-tropical cyclone and storm surge products, including prototyping of new or updated products.
