We examine to what extent the local conditions during the boreal summer monsoon can be predicted from the ISO indices. We examine how the large scale patterns influence local precipitation, winds , surface fluxes and local diurnal variability. We focus on the South China Sea near Luzon where the observational campaign of the PISTON project aiming to investigate the land-ocean-sea interaction in the Maritime Continent during the summer monsoon will take place in the August-September of 2018. The various indices describing the intraseasonal variability in this region are used , including the OLR/wind based BSISO, and its regional components WPISO and IOISO as well and indices based on the patterns of the eastward and westward propagating precipitation. We also examine how the observed relationships are reflected in the global models
