The National Weather Service presented seven separate courses at the National Weather Service Training Center (NWSTC) in Kansas City between November 2016 and March 2017. These courses trained Science and Operations Officers (SOOs) and Development and Operations Hydrologists (DOHs) on the capabilities of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on board the GOES-R Series of spacecraft, starting with GOES-16. The class included a mix of lectures and hands-on activities using Web Applications and the Satellite Information Familiarization Tool (SIFT) that presented data from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) at first, and then from the GOES-16 ABI as those data became available. SOOs and DOHs received tools necessary to continue GOES-16 Training back at their offices, and learned about the roll-out of data from GOES-16. Course materials remain available to the NWS Forecasters within NOAA’s VLab.
