Assimilation of KOMPSAT-5 GPSRO in the GSI 4D-EnVar Assimilation System

There is an ongoing effort towards assimilation of KOMPSAT-5 GPSRO data in NCEP’s Global Data Assimilation and Forecast System. GSI 4D-EnVAR analysis scheme is used for assimilating the data. At present only the bending angle from KOMPSAT-5 GPSRO is being assimilated. The test assimilation were performed in non-cyclic mode, as snapshot cases. Preliminary result showed PRE-CQC (complex quality control) and Post-CQC assimilation diagnostics comparable to that of COSMIC data. The non-cyclic assimilation of this KOMPSAT-5 bending angle will be performed for a period of 30 days. Post analysis of the result will set the path for cyclic assimilation. Cyclic assimilation will be performed over longer duration, followed by case studies.
