A common theme of David's research over the past two-plus decades in the area of tropical cyclones has been on the thermodynamics and circulation dynamics of tropical cyclogenesis and the hypothesized role of the mid-level vortex in supporting the genesis process. This talk will present first a summary of David's excellent leadership in the TCS08, PREDICT and HS3 field campaigns. The talk will then review his and other contemporary views on the role of the mid-level vortex.
