Full physics hydrological models such as the NOAA National Weather Service Office of Water Prediction National Water Model (NOAA/NWS/OWP/NWM) are now available to both the research and operational segments of the hydrological community. The NWM has been in operational use and for the over a year. In this work we compare soil moisture observations from the NOAA Physical Sciences Division (PSD) Russian River Basin soil moisture network with medium range (0-10 day) operational forecasts of soil moisture obtained from NWM version 1.1.3 during the extreme precipitation events observed over Northern California during the months of January and February 2017
