A 20km version of the Rapid Update Cycle will be implemented at NCEP later in 2000. This version will provide more accurate forecasts of precipitation, wind, temperature, and moisture, especially where orographic effects are important. Improved convection and stable cloud microphysics parameterizations will be included in the 20km RUC, along with more precise land-use fields. The 20km version will also contain a 3-d variational analysis and an initial cloud analysis using GOES cloud-top pressure data. Performance of the 20km RUC compared to the 40km version will be presented at the conference.
