An experiment to assess the impact of GOES rapid scan images on cloud drift wind determinations was conducted this winter. Termed GWINDEX, for GOES rapid-scan WINDs Experiment, the 3 month trial was designed to provide 7.5 minute rapid scan images each hour from GOES-10 to derive high-resolution cloud motion winds over the East Pacific and western US coast using the CIMSS automated winds processing system. These wind fields were derived in real time each hour and disseminated to NWS forecast offices, the PACJET experiment forecast center, and FSL for inclusion in RUC model studies. Results will be presented.
