Professor Lev Gutman was a pioneer in mesoscale meteorology. He worked extensively during the years of the Soviet Union and its policy of being mostly closed to the Western countries in the Cold War. However, his seminal accomplishments must be widely recognized. He did his research in an environment with limited computer power for numerical modeling of mesoscale atmospheric features and thus focused mostly on analytical analyses - results that are very much relevant today. In my talk, I will relate the accomplishments of Professor Gutman to the research direction in the West. I will emphasize how much his important work connects directly to what is being completed today in 2023
