Image processing in introductory survey courses in Astronomy and Meteorology

Image processing is rarely taught in introductory astronomy and meteorology courses. Image processing differs from image interpretation in that the actual numbers of photons received from each field of view are used in some calculation to determine a quantitative relationship. The laboratories discussed in the paper provide a means of determining either the distance to Barnard's Star or the horizontal velocity of a cloud across the field of view of two images.

Both laboratory exercises have been tested in introductory courses at the college level and are suitable for advanced Earth Science courses.
