An Initialization Scheme for a Hurricane Prediction System

This is to improve the initialization procedure in a hurricane prediction system based on the Penn State/NCAR Mesoscale Model (version 5, MM5). The initialization procedure is shown to be necessary to improve storm track and intensity forecasting. The scheme will be tested for the Atlantic storm cases of the 1999 hurricane season.
