1232 NOAA's Next Generation Global Prediction System and the National Earth System Prediction Capability

Wednesday, 25 January 2017
4E (Washington State Convention Center )
Fred Toepfer, NOAA, Silver Spring, MD; and T. Schneider, V. Tallapragada, J. C. Carman, and D. McCarren

In July of 2016, NOAA selected a new non-hydrostatic dynamical core as the basis for a community approach to developing a Next Generation Global Prediction System.  This, along with the development of scale-aware physics and enhanced data assimilation, will enable a coupled strategy for unified global modeling across time and space scales, including sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) prediction.  This talk will describe NOAA’s strategy and plans, with an emphasis on S2S time-scales, engagement with the research community, and engagement with the National ESPC partners.
