A case of wet snow icing immediately downstream of mountains is investigated with a numerical model. The simulation indicates strong downslope winds, large quantities of spillover precipitation and low level dry airmass in the lee. All these factors contribute to observed extreme wet snow icing on overhead power lines. The study indicates that high-resolution simulations in real-time will be useful for prediction of local wet snow icing downstream of major mountains.
